If you've ever looked at a tire's sidewall, you may have seen UTQG (Treadwear): 500 A A. But what does it actually mean?
UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grading) is a rating system that helps you compare passenger car tires. It measures three things:
- Treadwear - How long the tire is expected to last.
- Traction - How well the tire stops on wet roads.
- Temperature - How well the tire handles heat at highway speeds.
Understanding the Treadwear Rating
The treadwear number gives you an idea of the tire's expected lifespan.
For example:
- 300 - Shorter tread life, often found on performance tires.
- 500 - A good balance of durability and performance.
- 700+ - Designed for long tread life and everyday driving.
In general, the higher the treadwear number, the longer the tire is expected to last.
However, a higher number doesn't always mean a better tire. Tires with lower treadwear ratings often provide better grip and handling, while higher-rated tires are built to last longer.
What About the "A A" Ratings?
A UTQG rating like 500 A A also includes:
- First "A" (Traction): Good wet-road braking performance.
- Second "A" (Temperature): Excellent resistance to heat buildup during driving.
Which Rating Should You Choose?
For most drivers, a tire with a treadwear rating between 500 and 700 offers an excellent balance of durability, safety, and value.
If you drive mainly on highways or commute every day, a higher treadwear rating may save you money over time. If you prefer sporty handling and maximum grip, a lower treadwear rating may be a better choice.
